What to wear to a summer wedding

Choosing what to wear to a summer wedding can be confusing for men. This is because summer weddings come in different settings. They can be inside or outside, during daytime of in the evening, formal or informal. Summer weddings outside and during daytime are mostly more casual than summer weddings inside in for example a chic hotel in the evening. It's not appropriate to wear a tuxedo to a daytime summer wedding at the beach or a seersucker suit to a black tie summer wedding during the night. Showing up in your jeans and shirt is absolutely not done, even for a casual wedding. So do dress up.

  • The first thing to do when deciding what to wear to a summer wedding is checking the invitation of the summer wedding you're attending. The invitation provides useful information like the location of the wedding, the day-part in which the wedding is held and sometimes the dress code or the formality of the wedding. The wedding can be formal, semi formal or casual.

What to wear to a summer wedding that is formal

Most formal summer weddings have a dress code like black tie or white tie. Especially when the wedding takes place in the evening or at a chic venue. When there is no dress code given, wearing a tuxedo or a dark suit are the best attire to wear.

  • Formal summer weddings call for a dark suit or tuxedo, regardless of the season. When you are planning to wear a tuxedo, you have to dress by the rules. Click here for more information about how to wear a tuxedo.
  • Wear your dark suit with a crisp white shirt. A white shirt adds a fresh touch to the outfit.

  • Do wear a tie. Ties can be a way to add an extra dimension to your outfit. Be creative, but don't make it to outrageous.
  • Wear long socks of silk or wool.
  • As footwear go for dark leather shoes. Make them shine. Even though it's a summer wedding, flip-flops are totally inappropriate at a formal event.
  • Always wear a belt. The belt should match with your shoes.
  • As accessories you can wear cuff links, a pocket square or tie clips. Wearing a watch is optional, but only when the dress code allows it. For example with a black or white tie dress code wearing a watch is seen as impolite during the party. Don't wear any supplementing accessories (except for your wedding ring if you have one).

What to wear to a semi formal summer wedding

If the summer wedding is semi formal, still make sure you wear a suit. You don't want to come underdressed to a wedding. The suit doesn't have to be black but still go for a dark color when the wedding takes place in the evening. During daytime wearing lighter colors is also allowed.

  • Wear a suit. Afternoon weddings call for light colored suits like light gray or khaki. Evening weddings require darker suits. It's important not to wear a sport jacket and pants.

  • Go for a light colored shirt. It gives your outfit a fresh and polished touch. A white shirt is always a good choice.
  • In the possible heat during a summer wedding, the type of fabric of your shirt and suit are important considerations when you're choosing your attire. Go for lightweight tropical wools, linen blended with cotton or silk-linen blend.
  • A tie is optional. Be creative and choose a tie that gives your outfit extra flair. If you're doubting about the tie you can wear the tie and decide on the wedding if you're omitting the tie by taking it off.
  • Wear a belt. The belt should match with your shoes.
  • Go for long socks of silk or wool.
  • As footwear you can go for leather shoes or suede shoes for a slightly less formal look. Unless the ceremony takes place at the beach, don't wear flip-flops. At a summer wedding during the night flip-flops are totally not done.
  • The only accessory that is acceptable with a suit is a watch. An exception is off course your wedding ring if you have one. Cuff links are only appropriate with formal attire. Leave all the other accessories at home.

What to wear to a summer wedding that is casual

For a casual summer wedding during the evening go for a suit. This shouldn't be a dark colored suit. Instead lighter materials like cream, khaki or light grey should be worn. With the possible heat at a summer wedding, go for breathing fabrics.

  • Wear a light colored suit like cream, khaki or light grey.
  • Wear a shirt or a white polo shirt with your khaki suit. Don't wear a t-shirt even though it's summer.

  • When the casual summer wedding is held during the afternoon, wearing a sport coat instead of a suit is also acceptable. But you must be sure that the wedding is casual. Too casual is not done at a wedding. It's better to appear overdressed than under dressed. So never wear jeans or sneakers to a wedding.
  • Combine the sport coat with a shirt or a plain light colored polo. Don't wear a t-shirt.
  • As pants with your suit coat you can go for light colored suit pants or khaki's.
  • You can choose to take off your jacket during the day or evening.
  •  Don't wear a tie.
  • Wearing a belt is optional.
  • As footwear go for light or dark colored leather shoes or suede shoes. Flip-flops can be worn if the wedding is held at a beach.
  • Go for long socks of silk or wool.
  • There are no rules according accessories. But we recommend you to keep it simple with a maximum of two, wear simply a watch for example. Weddings are not the events to show off your bling.
