How to dress for a wedding

The first thing you should know, before choosing your outfit, is the dress code for the  wedding guests. Often the dress code is specified in the wedding invitation. If this information is not specified in the wedding invitation, looking at the wedding venue might help. A wedding that is located in a ballroom, already tells you that the attire is probably more formal than for most outdoor weddings. If you’re still doubting, feel free to ask the bride and groom or other invitees what kind of attire is appropriate.

Normally the best party attire for a wedding is a tuxedo or a dark suit. Depending on the dress code you can change your party attire to make it more or less formal.

What to wear to a wedding: formal

For a formal wedding a tuxedo is the best attire to wear. To see how you should wear a tuxedo, check out “Black tie dress code”. Nowadays a dark suit is also acceptable for a formal wedding.

What to wear to a wedding: less formal

If the wedding is less formal, still make sure you wear a suit. You don’t want to come to casual to an average wedding, unless a casual dress code is required. The suit doesn't have to be black but still go for a darker color, unless the wedding takes place in a garden or on the beach, than you can also go for a lighter color. You can make your outfit less formal by omitting the tie or by taking off the jacket during the party.

What to wear to a wedding: casual

For casual and most outdoor weddings it is acceptable to wear a sport coat instead of a suit. Often it is also more acceptable to break with the tradition of wearing dark colored attire. Lighter materials, like cream or khaki colored cotton pants, can also be worn. But keep in mind, even for a casual wedding being too casual is not done! On a wedding it is always better to be overdressed than under dressed. This means that we never want to see jeans or sneakers at a wedding. Instead, combine your pants with matching leather dress shoes and you’re ready to go.

Our most important tips:

To complete your attire there are some tips that can finish off your outfit.

  • It’s a must to wear leather dress shoes. Make sure you wear the right type of shoe, matching your outfit and belt. For some casual weddings suede shoes are also an option. Sneakers are not done.
  • Make your (leather) shoes shine.
  • Wear long socks. Socks should match the color of the pants. White socks are not recommended.
  • Wear a belt that matches your suit and shoes. Choose a plain leather belt.
  • A tie is optional. For a formal wedding a tie is a must. If you're wearing a necktie, keeping the color of the tie in the same color tone as your shirt or your suit is the most elegant. keep your necktie plain.
  • Make sure your shirt is ironed. The shirt must be in one color. Don’t choose a shirt with wild colors or prints.
  • The only accessory that is acceptable with a suit is a watch but with the most formal dress codes like black tie and white tie a watch is also not allowed. An exception is off course your wedding ring. Leave all the other accessories at home.
  • Cuff links are only appropriate with formal attire. Don’t wear cuff links with a sport coat.
